In Arte gallery in October 2nd will be opened exhibition of Dusan Otasevic – Amnesiator. Amnesiator is a wooden chair that provides a sitter with erasing of all of his unwanted memories. Amnesiator helps you to forget things you do not want to remember, removes connection between causes and consequences and enables you to forget people and events.
Aside of the chair, a short film will be presented. It is a film that presents an attempt to apply this conceptually conceived work in practice, and also a humorous contemplation of it's function, aim and results.
Amnesiator is similar to Otasevic's best work dating back to sixties, when he made critically-ironic objects as one one of the first exponents of Belgrade New figuration. Amnesiator is not, similarly, deprived of characteristic social and political engagement, and it can be understood as recapitulation of his earlier tendencies: a machine that erases memory of people, inhabitants of a country with air constantly contaminated by bad social and political condition, with help of humor is absolved of negativity.
“We are laughing or otherwise we would cry” - a sentence that marked postmodernism (whose forerunner in Serbia in sixties was, amongst others, Otasevic), could be used as a moto for Otasevic's exhibition in Arte gallery. With idea to interact with audience – because, as it is familiar, Otasevic's work is not hermetic and closed within it's own boundaries, but is directed to anyone – there will also be a box . Visitors will be able to write anonymously their own unwanted memories and put them in the box – a warehouse of collective memory and individual memories.
