Milenko Divjak's text about Still Life

This cycle of works develops itself on basis of my understanding of art as reaching "magic values", where Ihese values do not serve any moor as a reagent for under pressing of the nature to (he man, process known from the first remnants of human artistic activities in history - hut to restore respect to this endangered nature, and create a new, harmonic relation between nature and human society as well as harmony within society itself. Not by accident as (he source served me one theme, common in history of art bul disdained by contemporary art: stili life. In last decades of the XX century contemporary art transformed roll of artist from " (he human conscience" to a creative individual building up his own hermetic world, much to compare with cancerous process in the human body. Not to wonder, art that is conlemporary must react on real estate of human society, therefore the "medicine of still life" became anachronism and demode. Meditative-hedonistic character of still life could only serve as row material in latest formal languages of installation and performance. Thus, as a word in a sentence. I was attracted by srill life for the play of words where "still" could be understood as "calm, frozen" (life), or "still' - yet, still (alive). Calm, stopped life or still alive? An ambivalent access to this break point: relation of elements of nature and life, energy, I am taking this theme, still life, as an artistic motive in order to express, via its symbols and reflections an edge between reality and imagination - it is a path that once found induces "magic" which similar to the Jinn from the lamp has greater energy man the simple sum of forces used to reach it.

Surely, to extract this "undisplayble" I had to reorganize (he usual elements of still life: flora and fauna, cloth and table, vases and other objects as well as busts and parts of skeleton that gave connections with presence of human being in these compositions. I reduced it to only couple elements: table and draperies. The cloih decorated with ornaments of flora and fauna serves as two-dimensional value that emphasizes spatial relation of the table and cloth itself. The quality of space created is a most important third, fluid element of this new understanding of still life: it means to me the artistic motive of energy of nature.

In order to direct and better handle this energy. I choose a specific form of artistic organization of art piece - omnibus (lat, Omnis, omnibus = everything, to everybody). It is a principle where the work results by inside connecting of akin elcmenis. Omnibus handled me a possibility of using different facet's of my creative energy - different point dc view, several interpretations of the same symbols, even several stylistic approaches (o the chosen motive - still life. Connecting on specific way the pictures from which the omnibus is build up. I include the frame as well in this artistic play of tension and relaxation with catharsis as result. This catharsis is a new dimension of energy, mythic dream of harmony. This process and its results I applied io the other themes like landscape or urbanization; and thereby opened new questions, which answers and realizations are still waiting for me.
