The Idea
The basic idea of the entire conception is artistic play with two ways of expression: expression with words and expression with form (with sculpture). The main carriers of meaning (the transmitters of the idea) are the sculptures as aesthetical objects in a traditional sense. At the same time the contents carriers are letters, words and sentences – the names of sculptures, that not only stand for the denotation mark (sign), but that themselves become objects:
The sculptures are taking forms from symbols that are denoting words (letters) and thence the words become palpable – occurring in space. That way expression with words becomes expression with form.
The Motive and Thematic
The basic motive of sculptures is an introduction of the figurative research in the area of symbols.
The themes are classical: human torso, embracement. The way of transforming the theme is to move towards abstraction of the recognized, keeping the essential characteristics of distinction, and as a result there is a symbolical representing.
The theme is not lost, it is still present, but in a symbol which at the same time points to something else – the word (the letter) it denotes, or the name of sculpture itself.
This is a vicious circle play of meaning, denoted and sign, in which are two themes entwined: man and language.
The course of research
I follow form and language analogy:
idol – sequence – group
letter – word – sentence
I am starting from words, particular idols, and male and female torsos reduced to the simplicity of a sign.
As letters make words, in thoughtful combinations male and female torsos create sequences obtaining the meaning of words.
The next step is sentence. It is a big step: encircling the meaning of grouped series.
Everything is taken in account:
sign: graphical symbol
step to the third dimension: from drawing to sculpture
combination of convex and concave: female and male
arrangement of masses in space: sculpture means as well the space it acquires
rhythm of : letters in sentences
spoken words
echo of sentence
rhythm of: empty spaces in space
drawing and shape
space and sculpture
speech: in search for the perfect sentence
silence: in search for the perfect match
dovetailing: word meanings and breathing of sculptures
