Djordje Krstic is considered to be, together with Paja Jovanovic and Uros Predic, the most significant exponent of Realism in Serbian painting, but his style anticipated some innovations that were yet to come in modern Serbian art of 20th century. He painted figural scenes and genre, historical compositions, landscapes, but he also did church painting. His icons for altarpiece in Cathedral church in Nis provoked so-called “Dispute on orthodoxy”which included some of the leading artist, art critics and clergy. Subject of the dispute was forming of national style.
