Marklen Mosijenko, paintings

His themes are very recognizable and his artistic stamp so sound that his signature is often times insufficient.  Belgrade scenes, most often Kalemegdan Fort, the view of Saborna Crkva or Zemun, fruit or flowers arrangements are his trademark.

Still, he has been known to surprise even the most avid admirers with a new theme, showcasing his artistic skill and talent.  This is shown in his rear paintings of sculptures, self-portraits, and even abstracts (the most famous one was showcased in October Show “Soul Patch”), rear houses on Kosancicev Venac keeping them alive in people’s memories, because in reality, they are almost extinct, trees, which he planted himself in front of his studio, and also some of the places he visited as a student, such as Venice, Edinburgh, Florence, etc.

This seemingly typical citizen of Belgrade was actually born and raised in Russia, and this can be seen in his art.  His paintings resemble Puskin or Lermontov’s stories, which he has been joyfully reading in the spirit of his Russian ancestry.  Set of unfortunate war circumstances brought him from Moscow to Belgrade at a young age and Belgrade is where he stayed ever since.

Our famous art critic Stanic said about Mosijenko once that Paris has Utilo, Venice Kanaleto, and Belgrad has Marklen Mosijenko.  He is Belgrade’s main portrait painter, and his canvases resemble Sarden and Bodler.

His colors are transparent, light and gentle, and his style mostly aquatic.

Marklen Mosijenko with his sensibility brings to art what he sees – equilibrium altered to form.  It is not a verbatim transformation of the scene, but his description of optical sensation of relationships between the objects.  That is why his art sometimes seems to be just a beginning, leaving it to the viewer’s imagination to complete the picture.  That is why some of his works appear as mystical images from a fairy-tale.

His paintings are imprints from one’s memory, search for beauty transformed to a canvas, bringing his joy to us.  In Borhes’ words “Painting is an art of offering joy by the use of shapes and colors.”  And Marklen Mosijenko has been very successful in this.
