Graphics in Fashion.
Today, in the world of simplified and mass-produced fashions, we are less witness to artistic projects in clothing. One such is offered by Ljiljana Žegarac, a fashion designer from Belgrade. Formally observed, the final products of her creations are artifacts of century-long traditions - kimonos, overall her work forms an all-encompassing vision of applied art. Kimono, as the traditional expression of clothing style in Japan, implies a very complicated creation and almost ritualistic dressing procedure. Not discarding the kimono, Japanese designers have now recreated it into a more unified form, more suitable for modernization. Kimono, the idea of far East, is today part of a Western treasure, giving a purpose to working with exotic tradition. Ljiljana Žegarac has completely formed the image of the kimono in the spirit of post-modernistic expression. In fact, the clothing is just an excuse for working on traditional phenomena, so her exhibition is a rarity among applied arts that offers an awareness to the old, exclusive cultures. Interconnecting different content, archetypes, from African masks to dragons, very old archetypal projections, she focused on Japan, creating painting on kimonos and fabrics from select details of Hiroshige Hokusai, Utamara. With that, the kimono attains a mild, hidden erotic esthetic, and a noble visualization. On the other hand, in an artistic sense, her work offers integral value. In the whole spectrum of artistic works, we are witnessing the creation of an idea. With very precise drawings, preparation graphics for art on kimonos, the kimonos themselves along with unique printed textiles, the artist forms the premises for visual and applied arts. Far closer to art then fashion, it seems to us that she is only one offering a complete design of clothing line, a complete artistic expression of an idea, as well as visualization of the creation process. The values of this exhibition lie in the superior handling of the entities of modern creation of clothing articles, here extended beyond its boundaries.
